Relationships and Sex Education Statement: 


The Governors at Holy Family Catholic Primary School have adopted the Journey in Love Programme to support the non-statutory relationships and sex education from Nursery to Year 6. The programme of study is authentic to the teaching of the Catholic Church.  


At the heart of Christian faith is love. This means that we have to link every aspect of our being, from birth to death, with love. The ‘Journey in Love’ programme has at its source, the belief that we are made in the image and likeness of God.


A Journey in Love:

In each year group, an aspect of the mystery of love is explored. The children are encouraged to marvel at the wonder and beauty of God’s love. They take part in a series of tasks, activities and reflections which focus on physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual development.


Below is a brief outline of the content of the programme:

Children begin to know and understand that they are part of the wonder of God’s love and creation.

God Loves Each of Us In Our Uniqueness

Children know and understand that God made them unique and that although we are all different we are all special to him.

Year 1

We Meet God’s Love In Our Family

Children know and understand that they are growing and developing as member of their own family and God’s family.

Year 2

We Meet God’s Love In the Community

Children know and understand that they are growing and developing in a God-given community.

*communities we belong to

*the importance of community – giving and receiving

*how a community helps to develop our feelings and emotions

Year 3

How We Live in Love

Children know and understand the virtues essential to friendship and experience the importance both of forgiving and being forgiven and celebrating God’s forgiveness.

*ways to keep ourselves safe

*ways to nurture friendship


Year 4

God Loves Us In Our Differences

Children know and understand that they are all different and celebrate these differences as they appreciate that God’s love accepts us as we are and as we change

*the growth of a baby in the womb

* our likes and dislikes of ourselves

*how to appreciate personal gifts and talents

Year 5

God Loves Me In My Changing and Development

Children know and become aware of the physical and emotional changes that accompany puberty and grow further in their understanding of God’s presence in their lives

*physical changes in males


*behaviour changes as we grow

*emotional development of oneself and others

Year 6

The Wonder Of God’s Love in Creating New Life

Children develop in an appropriate way for their age, an understanding of reproduction and grow further in their appreciation of their dignity and worth as children of God

*explanation of how human life is conceived

*the growth and development of a baby in the womb

*recognition of the variety of relationships we have that all have a basis in love



As part of our commitment to you, we will hold a meeting annually for the parents and carers of children in Years 5 and 6 to discuss the programme. You have the right to withdraw your child from this aspect of the curriculum however, this is not to be confused with curriculum Science which is statutory.
